Modeling particle-fluid interaction in a coupled CFD-DEM framework

In this work, we present an alternative methodology to solve the particle-fluid interaction in resolved CFDEM coupling framework. This numerical approach consists of a Discrete Element Method (DEM) with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) scheme, solving motion immersed particles fluid phase. As novelty, our explicitly accounts for body force acting on phase when computing local momentum balance equations. Accordingly, implement fluid-particle buoyant and drag forces as function shear strain pressure gradient. benchmark, study Stokesian limit single particle. The validation is performed comparing outcomes ones provided by previous analytical prediction. general, find that new implementation reproduces very good accuracy dynamics. Complementarily, settling terminal velocity sphere under confined conditions.
